Just like many other skills, taking care of our memory is a “practice makes perfect” situation. We know countless ways of taking care of our body, from nutrition through different kinds of physical activities, yet we shouldn’t forget about our memory!
Dedicate a few moments every week to practice the different types of memory and keep them in the right shape:
- Short term memory: ask yourself once in a while what was your last meal? Where did you put your toothbrush? When was your last phone call and who did you talk to?
- Long term memory: try and solve a question you already solved once - a puzzle, a math question… What was the favorite color of your friend from school?
- Explicit memory: test your mind with retrieval of your parent’s anniversary, your friends’ birthdays… When did you graduate from high school?
- Implicit memory: practice some complicated actions that you never had to really think about any of the steps included. Ride your bicycle, knit, see, type, or navigate to a known place without the assistance of a map or navigation app.
Remember! Your mind has some plasticity! It is no longer a concept of a stiff non-changeable system. Investing in your mind is always a good investment, influencing your mental state right now and also for the long term.
Wishing you a good night’s sleep
And worth remembering days
